Carlow Women of Spirit Awards
Carlow University’s Women of Spirit Awards, an evening dedicated to honoring five outstanding women pioneers, was an inspiring success. The special event began with a welcome from the Mistress of Ceremonies, Peggy Finnegan, to the 350 guests gathered at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. The welcome was followed by an invocation by Sister Sheila Carney and remarks by Carlow University’s President Dr. Mary Hines. The awards, recognizing women devoted to values, scholarship, vision, and legacy, were awarded to Sister Fidelis McDonough, Dr. Theresa Whiteside, Dr. Judith Davenport, and posthumously to Anne Freyvogel Hanna, respectively. The 2010 National Woman of Spirit Award was presented to United States Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin. “It was a celebration of remarkable women,” said Louise Sciannameo, Carlow University’s Vice President of Communications and Community Relations. “We were very moved to know that the Surgeon General’s values were very much in line with those of our institution.”
