Living Landmark Recognition Event- 6/24/10
More than 100 guests toured the recently renovated Oakmont Country Club, a National Historic Landmark, when Carol Semple Thompson, the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open general chairwoman, was honored with the Living Landmark Award by The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. “Everything sort of lined up,” says Jack Miller, director of gift planning for the foundation. “It was perfect. We had a chance to recognize Carol for her example to the region as a person and a community leader.” Semple Thompson, preservationist and Sewickley native, was honored for her contributions to amateur golf and support of the foundation’s preservation efforts. She is a seven-time USGA champion and one of five golfers to win three different USGA individual championships, an achievement that places her with the likes of JoAnne Carner, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods.
