World Premiere Screening and Reception of Newspaper of Record: Pittsburgh Courier 1907-1965 - 2/1/10
Stacks of newspapers, a vintage delivery bicycle, newsboys, and the distant memory echo of “Extra! Extra!” transformed the interior of the Twentieth Century Club for the world premiere screening and reception of Newspaper of Record: Pittsburgh Courier, 1907-1965. Film-maker and University of Pittsburgh alumnus Kevin Love created the documentary, which chronicles the success of the nation’s most influential black newspaper, The Pittsburgh Courier. The invite-only event was co-hosted by Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg and Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs Robert Hill, as part of Pitt’s Black History Month Programming. Newspaper of Record: Pittsburgh Courier, 1907-1965 includes several interviews with people associated with the newspaper, including former Courier assignment writer and accredited black war correspondent Frank Bolden and former Courier reporter and first black woman PhD recipient at Pitt, Edna Chappell McKenzie.
